Yankees trade deadline and what it could mean for CC Sabathia

If the Yankees choose not to address their starting pitching dilemma and instead rely on their current roster and the full strength return of Luis Severino and Dellin Betances, here’s how I see them handling their postseason roster.

They will basically get rid of the traditional pitching rotation (which is almost always the case for teams in the postseason anyway) and instead will feature just 2 starting pitchers (as opposed to the typical 3-4 playoff starters).

The rest will be in the bullpen.

The starters will be Tanaka and Germán with the question mark being James Paxton. Big Maple has to pitch some big games like Domingo did against Boston in his last appearance on Domingo (5.1 IP, 3 ER, 9Ks, 4 hits, 1 BB and the W), if he wants to definitively start a game this October. Tanaka is a lock to get a postseason start due to precedent, and Domingo Germán will too most likely as he has arguably been the Yankees best starter this season. An innings limit along with his potential upside out of the bullpen however, could turn Germán into a reliever. We’ll see, still not sure; his rest of the season performance will most likely determine his role in the postseason.

Who will start games for the New York Yankees this October is a question still up in the air... and without a move to be made yet, here’s another question:

What if the Yankees don’t add a top of the rotation guy or anyone at all?

Here’s my playoff pitching staff if the Yankees choose not to add a top of the rotation starter:

  • Domingo Germán

  • Masahiro Tanaka

  • Adam Ottavino

  • Chad Green

  • Zack Britton

  • Dellin Betances*

  • Luis Severino*

  • James Paxton

  • JA Happ

  • Tommy Kahnle

  • Combination of potential acquisition and CC Sabathia/Nestor Cortes Jr./David Hale.

  • Aroldis Chapman

My postseason roster may not include CC Sabathia. I don’t think there’s room for him if* Dellin Betances and Luis Severino are both healthy* and also if they add another arm before tomorrow’s deadline. Even without a move being made, the Yankees may elect to go with Cortes or David Hale who have shown they can provide quality innings out of the bullpen. Again, this all depends on the return of Severino and Betances but if they return and if the Yankees add another arm, Sabathia may be left off the postseason roster.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do with CC and also at the trade deadline which expires in less than 4 hours. This whole article could be meaningless any minute now—- stay tuned to @NYYSportsTalk to find out.
