Gary, Gleyber lead Yanks to 8-4 victory on South Side

June 17, 2019

The Yankees defeated the White Sox on Saturday night by a score of 8-4. Chad Green got the start as the Yankees’ opener, going two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while walking none and striking out six. Gary Sanchez got the Yankees on the board in the fourth, with a two-run double to score Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks to make it 2-0. Gleyber Torres doubled the lead with a two-run home run later in the inning, his fifteenth homer of the year.

Torres extended the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Sanchez in the sixth, and Cameron Maybin would make it 6-0 with a solo homer in the seventh. An RBI groundout by Sanchez to score Brett Gardner would push the Yankee lead to seven runs. The White Sox cut the deficit to three on an RBI single by Jose Abreu to score Yolmer Sanchez and a 3-run homer by James McCann off of Jonathan Holder to make it 7-4. A bases-loaded walk of Didi Gregorius to score Gardner would make it 8-4, and the Yankees went on to win by that score with Aroldis Chapman recording the final three outs of the game.

The Yankees are now 42-27 on the season, half a game up on the second-place Rays. They’ll look to split the series with the White Sox tomorrow afternoon as they send James Paxton to the mound, looking to bounce back from a rough start in the nightcap of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Mets. He’ll go up against Odrisamer Despaigne, making his second start of the season. First pitch is set for 2:10 PM ET.
