Yankees use 7-run 6th inning to top Rays 13-5

May 20, 2019

Behind a big seven-run sixth inning, the New York Yankees topped the Tampa Bay Rays 13-5.

With the win, the Yankees won two out of three games against the Rays and moved back into first place in the American League East.

In the top of the sixth inning with the game tied 5-5, the Rays loaded the bases with two outs for Austin Meadows. Adam Ottavino would get the Yankees out of the jam by striking out Meadows.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out, the Yankees retook the lead on a bases loaded walk from Luke Voit. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kendry Morales walked to extend the Yankees lead to two. Gleyber Torres followed that up with an RBI infield single. Thairo Estrada would blow the game wide open with a three-run double to put the Yankees up 11-5.

Ottavio earned the win, getting just one out to get the Yankees out of the sixth inning. Chance Adams earned his first career save, pitching three innings of shutout ball and striking out four.

Aaron Hicks hit a two-run home run for his first homer of the year. Kendry Morales also drove in two runs while Brett Gardner went 3-5 with three RBIs including a two-run home run. Thairo Estrada drove in three runs despite being a late replacement for Gio Urshela who left the game with an injury.

The Yankees will be back in action tomorrow as they go on the road to start a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.
