Yankees beat Royals 6-2; even series 1-1

April 20, 2019

The Yankees topped the Royals by a score of 6-2 on Friday. CC Sabathia got the ball for the Yankees eyeing his 3000th career strikeout as he entered the game with 2,989 career K's. He would end up going 5 innings giving up no earned runs and striking out 5. His pitch count kept him from going another inning due to some errors behind him, most notably a routine grounder to first base botched by Luke Voit, that would have ended the inning. The royals would capitalize on that error as an Adalberto Mondesi 2-out single made it 1-0 Royals.

In the bottom half of the same inning, Brett Gardner would drive a high 2-0 fastball into the Yankees' bullpen for a 2-run homer, giving the Yanks a 2-1 lead. 2 innings later Mike Tauchman would join in on the action with his second home run of the season making it 3-1.

In the top of the 6th Luis Cessa would relieve CC Sabathia and surrender back to back doubles. The 2nd double came off the bat of Alex Gordon and led to a Royals run. 3-2 Yankees now. Cessa would limit the damage and would finish out the inning with only 1 run surrendered.

In the bottom of the 6th the Yanks would load the bases. DJ LeMahieu came to the plate and lined a ball towards the gap in right center. It looked like the Yankees were about to get 3 runs, but Billy Hamilton leaped and caught the ball. It would be a sac fly as Judge would score from 3rd on the spectacular play. The next batter, Clint Frazier, would draw a walk, but the 4th ball got away from Royals catcher Martin Maldonado and Luke Voit would chug home from 3rd making it 5-2 Yankees.

In the 7th the Yankees would score their 6th and final run off of a Tyler Wade bunt single and in the 9th inning, Zack Britton would pitch a 1-2-3 inning and secure the Yankees' 9th victory of the season.

Tomorrow the Bombers will take on the Royals in game 3 of 4 of this series. Masahiro Tanaka will be the starter for the Yankees tomorrow and Heath Fillmyer will start for the Royals. First pitch is at 1:05 as the Yankees look to get their record back to .500
