The Yankees defeated the White Sox by a score of 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Coming off an ugly, rain-shortened loss the night before, the Yankees needed to get back on track in CC Sabathia’s 2019 debut. He turned in a very solid first start of the year, going five innings, allowing no runs on just one hit while walking none and striking out three.
The game turned out to be quite the pitchers’ duel, as former Yankee Ivan Nova turned in a quality start in his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since being traded to the Pirates in July of 2016. The score remained at 0-0 until the seventh inning, when a broken bat, pinch hit RBI single by Luke Voit drove in Gleyber Torres for the first run of the game. Kyle Higashioka added an insurance run with a sac fly to score Greg Bird. Tyler Wade then followed up by getting down a squeeze bunt to drive in Clint Frazier, making it 3-0 Yankees.
Aaron Judge connected for his first home run at Yankee Stadium in 2019, his fourth of the season, to make it 4-0 Yankees in the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman came on in the ninth to secure the victory with a 1-2-3 inning. The Yankees move to 6-8 on the young season, and they’ll look to take the series tomorrow afternoon as they send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound. He’ll look to continue the success he’s had in his first three starts of the season as he goes up against Carlos Rodon, who enters Sunday with a 1-2 record and a 3.38 ERA in three starts so far this year.
