The Yankees lost to the Tigers by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday night. Masahiro Tanaka got the start for the Yankees, going a strong 6 ⅔ innings, allowing one run on eight hits while walking none and striking out seven. Clint Frazier got the Yankees on the board first, hitting a sacrifice fly to score DJ LeMahieu in his first Major League plate appearance of 2019. The Yankees clung to their 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth, when John Hicks hit an RBI double to score Jeimer Candelario and tie the game at one.
After coming on to record the final out of the seventh, Adam Ottavino pitched a scoreless eighth, and it was up to Aroldis Chapman to keep the game tied in the top of the ninth for the Yankees to try and walk it off in the bottom half. He was unable to do so, however, allowing an RBI double to Dustin Peterson to score Niko Goodrum and an RBI single to Jordy Mercer to score Peterson. The Yankees went down in order in the ninth, dropping the second game of this three-game set against the Tigers.
The Yankees will look to take the series tomorrow before going on the road. They’ll send Jonathan Loaisiga to the mound to make his first start of the season. In nine games (four starts) in 2018, he pitched to a 2-0 record and a 5.11 ERA. He’ll go up against Matthew Boyd, who is making his second start of 2019, following a 10 strikeout performance in 5 innings against Toronto last Friday. First pitch is set for 4:05 PM ET.
