Yankees fall 7-5 to Orioles; drop opening series

April 1, 2019

Despite having the potential game winning run at the plate with two outs in the ninth inning, the New York Yankees were unable to complete the comeback as they lost 7-5 to the Baltimore Orioles.

After a 3 hour rain delay, the Yankees fell behind 4-0 in the third inning. They finally got on the board with a two out bases loaded walk from Brett Gardner in the bottom of the fourth inning. Aaron Judge cut the Orioles lead to one with a two RBI single, but the rally ended with Giancarlo Stanton striking out.

Down by two again in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gary Sanchez hit his first home run of the year to cut the Orioles lead to 5-4.

In the top of the eighth with two outs, Stephen Tarpley gave up a two run home run to Joey Rickard to extend the Orioles lead to 7-4.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Greg Bird walked to extend the game. Gleyber Torres followed that up with an infield single and DJ LeMahieu hit an RBI single to cut the Orioles lead to 7-5.

With the Orioles bringing in left hander Paul Fry to face Gardner, Aaron Boone countered by pinch hitting Troy Tulowitzki for Gardner. The move ultimately didn’t pay off though, as Tulowitzki struck out as the potential game winning run to end the game.

The Yankees lost the final two games of the series and ended up dropping two out of three to the Orioles. Every other playoff team from the American League in 2018 also dropped their first series of the year as well.
