Yankees spring training recap

March 23, 2019

Man does time fly. It is crazy that baseball season is 5 days away! To say that the Yankees 2019 spring training has been less than optimal, injury wise, is an understatement for a club with such lofty expectations entering a season.

We all knew star SS Didi Gregorius would be out until mid season after his Tommy John surgery. However, things have gone further south as camp has continued.

Ace Luis Severino was shutdown on March 5 after being scratched from his scheduled spring training debut with shoulder soreness. An MRI revealed right rotator cuff inflammation. Sevy was shut down for 2 weeks, just began a throwing program on Wednesday, and won’t make his debut until May.

CC Sabathia was behind in his offseason program after dealing with his heart issue, and knee cleanup and won’t be ready to pitch until mid April.

Dellin Betances (who was behind in his offseason program because of the birth of his child) began the spring throwing in the low 90’s. He went for tests and was revealed to have a right shoulder impingement.

CF Aaron Hicks must have hurt his back carrying all the bags of money from his 7 year $70 million extension to the bank because he hasn’t played since.

Even young phenom Estevan Florial was unable to escape the injury bug after crashing into the OF wall making a catch. He suffered a non displaced fracture of his right wrist, and will be out 3 to 6 weeks minimum.

These injuries were all coincidental with the arrival to camp of perpetually injured

OF Jacoby Ellsbury on Sunday, right? Will Jacoby make any kind of contribution to this Yankee ballclub in 2019?

The Yankees are many experts' pick to win the world series. Injuries are the one thing that could derail them. They are a deep team in all areas except the OF (which is why so many fans wanted Bryce Harper) Clint Frazier didn’t help by hitting .130 with just 3 extrabase hits this spring and was optioned to minor league camp yesterday. Brian Cashman did what he does best and helped the rotation depth by signing veteran lefty Gio Gonzalez to a minor league deal. The southpaw will earn $3 million if he makes it to the big leagues, and has an April

20th opt out. The Betances injury is the least of my concerns. Tommy Kahnle is healthy

and looks like the Tommy Kahnle of 2017. Adam Ottavino was signed, Zack Britton was resigned, and Aroldis Champan’s knee seems healthy and he has looked good.

All the years I’ve watched baseball I’ve felt its better to have injuries happen in Spring Training as opposed to the thick of the season. The only one I’m sweating is Sevy. The Yanks cannot win a world series without him being a top line pitcher. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have been killing the ball this spring. Thankfully in the first 30 games of 2019 the Yanks only play 7 games against teams that were above .500 last year. The offense needs to carry this club out of the gate so they keep their collective heads above water until guys get healthy. If they get to May 1 above that .500 mark the Bombers should be ready to dominate.
