Sabathia pitches in rehab game; Bird update
For the first time since his heart procedure in December, CC Sabathia returned to the mound for the New York Yankees.
Sabathia pitched for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against the Detroit Tigers Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. CC pitched two innings, giving up just one run and two hits over two innings while striking out two batters.
After the 26 pitch outing, Sabathia reported that there were no problems.
Sabathia is scheduled to pitch again next Tuesday against Philadelphia Phillies prospects barring any setbacks. Sabathia is expected to miss the first couple weeks of the regular season, and once he’s back on the active roster he has a five game suspension to serve for the incident against the Tampa Bay Rays last September.
In other good news for the Yankees, Greg Bird’s x-rays and CT scans on his elbow came back negative. Bird was pulled from the line up today after he had soreness and swelling from getting hit by a pitch yesterday against the Houston Astros.
