Yankees acquire James Paxton from Mariners, part ways with Sheffield

The Yankees announced today they acquired left-handed pitcher James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners for Left-hander Justus Sheffield, right-hander Erik-Swanson, and outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams.

Paxton, 30, had a 3.76 ERA in 28 starts in 2018, with a no-hitter against the Blue Jays. He threw a career-high 160.1 innings and netted 208 strikeouts.

Sheffield, will become the top prospect in Seattle's system. He pitched to a 2.56 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 20 appearances (15 starts) for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2018.

Sheffield was one four players acquired from the Indians in the Andrew Miller trade (that trade also netted outfielder Clint Frazier), Sheffield allowed three runs in three September relief outings at the big league level.

Swanson went 8-2 with a 2.66 ERA across three levels. He finished the year at Triple-A, where he was 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 games (13 starts). Swanson was acquired from the Rangers as part of the Yankees' August 2016 trade of Carlos Beltran.

Thompson-Williams, hit .299/.363/.546 with 22 homers in Class A and Class A Advanced in 2018. He was a fifth-round Draft selection in 2016.
