Yankees Gregorius to undergo Tommy John surgery
Before Yankee fans could finish grieving their early departure in the 2018 postseason, the Yankees made several announcements today. The most significant announcement was that Didi Gregorius will undergo Tommy John surgery. The Yankees are optimistic they will have Didi for most of the 2019 season. Manager Aaron Boone indicated they believe the injury occurred when Gregorius played a ball of the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Yankees' GM Brian Cashman indicated Gregorius had a slight tear when he was traded to the Yankees in 2014, but it had not been an issue for Gregorius until now. How this plays out for the Yankees as far as a pursuit for Machado remains to be seen.
The Yankees also announced that CC Sabathia underwent a knee surgery today. This is the same surgery to drain fluid from his knee that he underwent last year.
The one promising comment from the press conference today was that the Yankees are looking to move Sonny Gray out of the Bronx. In a rather blunt moment, Brian Cashman said "It's best to try this some place else."
