Torres to 10 day DL, Wade recalled

After sending 2B Gleyber Torres to the 10-day DL, the Yankees recalled INF Tyler Wade from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday.

The move comes after an MRI revealed Torres had a right hip strain Wednesday. He will be out at least until the All-Star break, despite the fact Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he was “not overly concerned” after Torres was forced to leave Wednesday’s 6-2 win over the Braves with tightness in his right hip flexor. The All-Star Game is July 17.

Torres’ injury comes in the middle of a hot streak for the rookie, who has a 1.033 OPS since June 26. Along with teammate Miguel Andujar, Torres is considered a frontrunner in the race for Rookie of the Year, batting .294 with 15 home runs on the year.

Wade was with the Yankees on Opening Day, but struggled in his limited outings. A .086/.158/.143 line resulted in his demotion to the RailRiders after just 13 games. However, a .833 OPS in the minors since June 1 has apparently earned Wade a second chance.

Neil Walker will still get a majority of the time at second base, Boone said. Although Brandon Drury also has experience at the position, the 25-year-old has mainly been working at first and third bases since his trade to the Yankees.
