Yankees shut out in final game against Phillies, turn attention to Boston

June 28, 2018

The Yankees were unable to complete the three-game sweep of the Phillies as they lost by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday night. Luis Cessa got his first start of the year as Aaron Boone elected to manage a bullpen game being in a National League park. He pitched three innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two. After a scoreless first inning, Cessa made his lone mistake, allowing a three-run home run to Rhys Hoskins in the second inning to put the Phillies up 3-0. After a scoreless third from Cessa, Boone brought in Giovanny Gallegos to pitch the next three innings, all of which were scoreless.

Jonathan Holder and Domingo Germán both pitched shutout innings of their own, but the Yankees’ offense had no answers for Zach Eflin, as he pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only four hits while walking two and striking out six. Seranthony Domínguez secured a six-out save for the Phillies as they held on and won with the Hoskins home run being the only runs of the game.

The Yankees are now 52-26 on the season, falling to a half game out of first place with Boston’s 9-6 victory over the Angels. With tomorrow’s off day, the Yankees will look to either overtake or tie the Red Sox for first place (depending on if Boston wins or loses tomorrow) on Friday night at Yankee Stadium as the two rivals will meet for the first time since May 8-10. CC Sabathia will get the start for the Yankees, currently holding a 4-3 record with a 3.18 ERA. Eduardo Rodriguez will start for the the Red Sox, entering Friday with a 9-2 record and a 3.86 ERA. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM ET.
