Stanton earns pinstripes in walk-off fashion

June 21, 2018

The Yankees defeated the Mariners on Wednesday night by a score of 7-5. Jonathan Loaisiga got his second big league start, coming off a spectacular Major League debut last Friday in which he allowed no runs and only three hits in five innings. He was not as sharp in his second time around, however, going only 3 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Denard Span got Seattle on the board first in the fourth with an RBI single to score Kyle Seager. Dee Gordon added two more runs in the inning with a two-run single to score Ryon Healy and Ben Gamel to make it a 3-0 game. After Aaron Boone removed Loaisiga from the game in the fifth, Chasen Shreve came in and struggled, allowing two runs on a sacrifice fly by Span to score Nelson Cruz and an RBI single by Healy to score Seager.

Aaron Judge got the Yankees on the board in the fifth with a two-run single to score Miguel Andújar and Aaron Hicks, and he moved to second on a fielder error by Span. Didi Gregorius cut the deficit to two in the seventh with a sac fly to score Clint Frazier. An inning later, Gary Sanchez hammered a 1-1 pitch from Alex Colomé into the visitors’ bullpen to tie the game at five. After a scoreless top of the ninth by Aroldis Chapman, the Yankees looked to walk off on Ryan Cook. After a two-out single by Didi, Giancarlo Stanton crushed an 0-2 pitch from Cook 453 feet for a walk off home run, his signature Yankee moment, lifting the team to a 7-5 win.

The Yankees move to 49-22 on the season, and they look to complete the sweep of the Mariners tomorrow afternoon. Luis Severino will get the start, seeking his eleventh win of the year. He’ll go up against James Paxton, who is in the midst of a stellar season, currently 6-1 with a 3.53 ERA in 2018. First pitch is set for 1:05 PM ET.
