Series Preview: Yankees vs. Mariners
The Yankees come back to The Bronx after one day in D.C. where they split a suspended game and a full game. They will face the Seattle Mariners, who have really been heating up as of late. They are currently 2nd in the AL West thanks to the current Astros dominance, but Seattle shows the promise of a hopeful playoff team. James Paxton has blossomed into an ace, and they have the bats that help them contend in any game. It should be a competitive three game set.
GAME ONE: Tuesday June 19th @7PM
Domingo German (1-4 5,.23 ERA) vs Marco Gonzales (7-3, 3.42 ERA)
German is coming off his first career victory last week vs the Rays, where he gave up 3 runs but fanned 10 hitters. That’s back to back starts for German where he has performed well, but now he will be tested by the bats of Seattle. He will have to face solidified MLB hitters like Nelson Cruz and Dee Gordon, as well as up and coming stars like Mitch Haniger. German can make a big statement if he can shut down the hot Seattle lineup. Marco Gonzales has been a great piece to the Seattle rotation giving his team a chance to win every time out. He has not allowed more than 3 runs in any of his last 6 starts.
GAME TWO: Wednesday June 20th @7PM
Jonathan Loaisiga (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Felix Hernandez (6-6, 5.44 ERA)
We have a very interesting game two, with rookie Loaisiga making his second career start, coming off a great debut vs the Rays where he went 5 strong and completely kept them off the board. He will have a tougher task this time around against much more skilled bats of the Seattle lineup. He will face “King Felix” who has been just about anything but a king this season. We all know what he’s capable of, but he just hasn’t shown it this year. He’s given up 4 or more runs in 3 out of his last 5 starts. If Brett Gardner is to play, he has had a solid career vs Felix, batting .361 in 36 at-bats, and with 1 HR.
GAME THREE: Thursday June 21st @1PM
Luis Severino (10-2, 2.09 ERA) vs James Paxton (6-1, 3.44 ERA)
Game three looks to be the most exciting of the bunch, with a best on best pitching matchup. Our ace against theirs, in a daytime showdown. Both pitchers are Cy Young hopefuls, both with WHIPs near 1.0 (Severino 0.93) (Paxton 1.06) Paxton has been dominant, but is coming off of a terrible outing vs Boston where he only went 2 and a third, and gave up 5 runs. Paxton threw a no hitter on May 8th of this season. Severino continues to dominate, he went 8 scoreless vs the Rays last week, and he did that while clearly not having his best stuff. It’ll be exciting to watch him take on some prominent bats as he goes for his 11th win of the season.
The Yankees bats will look to give the pitching staff as much help as possible. Stanton is coming off of a 4 hit game last night and will try to bring more of that to the lineup. Also, the Yankees have recalled promising outfield prospect Clint Frazier back to the major league club. There is speculation that Gardner is nursing a minor knee injury and could possibly hit the DL soon. Frazier has 3 hits in 8 at-bats this season. He also has 1 RBI and 4 runs scored. It’ll be intriguing to see if he is just an extra outfielder for a few days, or if he’ll get significant playing time for the coming weeks. Didi Gregorius has been swinging the bat well as of late. He had 3 HRs last week, and is coming in on a 4 game hitting streak. The Yankees will look to improve on their 12-5 record so far in June.
