Big 5th inning propels Yankees over Rays
Aaron Hicks and Gleyber Torres combined to drive in all four of the New York Yankees runs in the fifth inning to lead them past the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hicks trimmed the Rays lead to one with a solo home run. Later in the inning with two outs and two runners on base, Torres hit a three run home run to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead.
In the next half inning, the Rays would score a run to trim the Yankees lead to one with two outs. They would put the potential game tying run on second base, but Domingo German would get out of the jam with his 10th strikeout of the night.
Aroldis Chapman worked a clean ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the season.
German earned his first win of the season, as he gave up just three runs over six innings of work and struck out 10.
Jonathan Loaisiga will make the first start of his MLB career tomorrow night for the Yankees. He’ll be opposed by former Yankees Nathan Eovaldi.
