Jordon Montgomery to undergo Tommy John

June 6, 2018

The Yankees rotation was dealt a big blow today as the team announced LHP Jordan Montgomery will undergo Tommy John surgery. Nicknamed Gumby, Montgomery was originally placed on the DL May 2nd when he left his start on May 1st in Houston after completing just one inning. The team originally expected him to miss 6-8 weeks with a left elbow strain. The diagnosis of Tommy John came as a shock as Montgomery had recently started throwing off flat ground to prepare for his return to the club. Montgomery isn't expected back until September of 2019. Montgomery had a 9-7 record with a 3.88 ERA in his rookie campaign. He was pitching well this season going 2-0 with a 3.62 ERA before the injury.

Domingo Germán is expected to keep his spot in the rotation for the time being. Despite struggling after his initial six inning, no hit performance vs. the Indians, Germán has had a couple solid outings in a row including giving up 4 ER over 6.2 innings last night vs. Detroit.

The Yankees could turn to their two top pitching prospects Chance Adams (5.26 ERA in AAA) and Justus Sheffield (3.80 ERA in AAA) should they want to replace Germán.

More than likely the Yankees will turn to the trade market to bolster their rotation. The Yankees were likely to make a trade for a starting pitcher regardless of whether Montgomery was coming back to the club or not. While the trade market has yet to fully develop since we are still 8 weeks away from the trade deadline the name you hear most associated with the Yankees is Texas RHP Cole Hamels. Hamels is pitching well this season with a 3.63 ERA. An interesting name to keep an eye on is San Francisco LHP Madison Bumgarner. He is making his 2018 debut Tuesday evening after breaking his finger in Spring Training. Should the Giants fall out of the race, the Yankees have the prospects to land the game changing postseason pitcher to lineup behind their ace, Luis Severino.
