Sanchez, Stanton, Torres take Yankees to victory
Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres lead the Yankees past the Royals 8-3 Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres combined for three home runs and six RBIs as they led the New York Yankees past the Kansas City Royals. Sanchez opened the scoring for the Yankees in the top of the first inning with a RBI double to put the Yankees up 1-0. Aaron Hicks would extend the lead to two with an inside-the-park home run in the top of the second inning. After the Royals tied up the game in the bottom of the third inning, Torres hit a three run home run in the top of the fourth inning top reclaim the lead at 5-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kansas City trimmed New York’s lead to two on a RBI single from Mike Moustakas. With runners on second and third with one out, Whit Merrifield flew out to Giancarlo Stanton—Moustakas would attempt to score but the relay from Stanton to Ronald Torreyes to Sanchez would get Moustakas out at the plate and keep the Yankees lead at two. Later in the top of the seventh inning Sanchez hit his first home run of the game to extend the Yankee’s lead back to three. In the top of the ninth inning, Stanton and Sanchez hit back to back home runs to put the Yankees up by the final score of 8-3. Sanchez led the Yankees at the plate, going 4-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. Luis Severino earned his seventh win of the season, pitching six innings and allowing three runs while striking out six. Tomorrow afternoon the Yankees will turn to Sonny Gray as they look to take two out of three from the Royals.
