Yankees begin series in Boston with a 14-1 loss
Well, if you were lucky enough to not have time to tune into this game, I envy you. The Yankees lost by an embarrassing score of 14-1 tonight to their arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox, to open a 3 game set.
The game was marketed as a pitcher’s duel. Sevy VS Sale. That wasn’t the case on this cold night in Boston. After just 2 innings of play the Sox took off to a 4-0 start. Severino didn’t have his slider. At times he looked a bit amped up (reminiscent of the 2017 wildcard game). All in all, while it was a pretty bad time for Sevy to pitch poorly, he had two great starts to begin the year before tonight. No need to panic.
Aaron Judge came into this game 0-12 against Chris Sale with 10 K’s. He quickly put the numbers behind him, with 2 singles in his first 2 AB and in the top of the 5th he would drive in the Yankees only run of the game. A 444 foot shot to dead center. Judge has looked great early on and to get 3 hits off of a guy like Sale only shows he’s gotten even better from last year. Scary, I know.
After terrible performances by Tommy Kahnle and Chasen Shreve helped the Red Sox make it a 10-1 lead, Mookie Betts put the nail in the coffin (as if the coffin wasn’t already shut) as he would blast a grand slam over the Green Monster, making it a laughable 14-1 ballgame.
Everything went wrong for the Yankees in this one... everything. Offense, defense, pitching were all terrible. On the bright side, after Stanton struck out in his first two at-bats he singled and doubled in his next two. Also, Judge and Didi stayed red hot.
The Yankees will be fine. Let’s not forget how the 2009 Yankees started the year. It looked like the Sox were going to run away with the division in June, but as we all know, they didn’t. Some people have already written the Yankees off, and it’s just 11 games in! Think about how crazy that is for a second.
The Yanks are back at it tomorrow at 7:10 PM ET. David Price will be on the hill for Boston and Masahiro Tanaka for New York. Two really good pitchers will face off again. Hopefully we’ll get a reimbursement for the pitchers duel we were promised tonight. The Yankees usually do well against Price, so there’s that.
