With expectation comes irrational outcry

April 9, 2018

The Yankees are just 10 games into the season, and things haven't been pretty despite winning half of their games thus far.  Adding salt to the wound is the slow start of multi-million dollar slugger, Giancarlo Stanton. A notoriously slow starter, Stanton took some heat in the Bronx during his first ever home stand with the Yankees.  In 6 games at the stadium, the reigning NL MVP hit just .107 in 28 at bats, with 1 HR, 3 RBI, and 16 strike outs. It wasn't just the numbers that buried Stanton this past week, it was the situations in which he failed to produce that ultimately left Yankees' fans calling for his head.

Just 10 games into the season and I've seen fans wanting Stanton removed from the team.  Just 10 games in and I've seen fans demanding Cashman acquires another starting pitcher.  Just 10 games in and I've seen fans calling for the firing of Aaron Boone if the Yankees get swept in Boston this week.  Yes, these losses mean something.  It doesn't matter how many games into the season you are, when you lose the way this team has lost it is gut wrenching.  BUT, this team is still finding itself. This team is too talented to be a .500 club the entire season. Not to mention, Greg Bird and Aaron Hicks have been injured, along with many others over this last week. Take a deep breath, the New York Yankees are going to be OKAY.

The 2018 season is the first in a handful of years that the Yankees once again have expectations surrounding their every move.  And with heightened expectation comes irrational outcry.  It's part of being a fan, I get it.  But here are a few key points to remind yourself of. Quick reminders that, if the expectations weren't so high, we wouldn't all be feeling the way we do.

1) The 2017 New York Yankees started the season 1-4 and had a record just ONE game better through their first 10, going 6-4.  That same team went on to win 91 games and fell one game shy of the World Series.

2) Yes, the Yankees are off to a slow start in 2018, but it's only 10 games. Want to know how many rough 10 game stretches the 2017 Yankees had?

SAME OR WORSE 10 GAME STRETCHES IN 2017

The Yankees went 5-5 over three different 10 game stretches last season.

The Yankees went 4-6 over two different 10 game stretches last season.

The Yankees went 3-7 once in a 10 game stretch last season.

The Yankees went 2-8 once in a 10 game stretch last season.

The point, 5-5 isn't that bad. Teams have had worse stretches over a 10 game span. If this was mid-season it would be chalked up to a mediocre stretch in the schedule.

3) In 2017, Giancarlo Stanton had 2 HR and 7 RBI in his first 10 games of the season. This year he has 3 HR and 7 RBI in his first 10 games of the season. The biggest difference is his excessive amount of strike outs this early on in 2018. He will adjust and start swinging at better pitches. BUT THIS IS GIANCARLO STANTON. The same guy we all went crazy for in December when the Yankees announced that they signed him.  Those 2 HR and 7 RBI in his first 10 games last season translated into 59 HR and 132 RBI at the end of the year. Give the guy a chance, don't be so quick to write him off, especially after just 10 games.

4) Outside of Jordan Montgomery's most recent outing, the Yankees starting pitching has been great.  We have two guys at the head of the rotation both pitching like aces on the staff in Tanaka and Severino.  Montgomery was fantastic in his rookie campaign last year, yet fans are ready to replace him after one bad start.  If the Yankees were 8-1 going into the game Sunday afternoon, and Monty had a rough start, everyone would think "he will be better next time out." But because the team has slipped to 5-5, and the expectations surrounding the team are heightened, everyone wants Montgomery replaced by another SP.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath.  Relax.  We are the New York Yankees, we are here to win, and we are going to win. Let the team gel, let them find their chemistry, their groove. Once they start winning, they will begin to have fun, and once they're having fun, well, you saw what they did in 2017.
