Aaron Boone and Yankees Optimistic On Bird Injury

As per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Aaron Boone and the Yankees are "at least a little optimistic, based on pictures" of Greg Bird's return. Boone added, "but tomorrow should tell us a lot as far as what it is time-wise, all those kinds of things." Greg Bird has missed most of the previous two seasons with injuries and was taken out of the lineup on Saturday and examined for discomfort found in his right foot. Bird, who was scheduled to play first base on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, left Champion Stadium and returned to George M. Steinbrenner Field to be examined by orthopedic specialist Daniel Murphy. He later left to have a MRI and CT scan on the his foot, which found inflammation.

It was unclear of what was causing the discomfort in Bird’s foot or if it was related to the surgery he had last July to remove a bone from the same ankle.

“I’m worried about it, to be honest,” Cashman said before the test results came out. “I’m not sure what we’re dealing with, but when Greg, when he can’t tee it up, it’s a problem for us because he’s a vital member of our organization.”

@YankeesPR put out an update on Bird on Saturday evening saying “Update on 1B Greg Bird: Results from an MRI and CT scan taken earlier today revealed right foot inflammation. Bird is scheduled to be evaluated by foot specialist, Dr. Martin O’Malley, on Monday in New York.”

It's never great news when a player has to leave the team to see a doctor, but fortunately for the Bronx Bombers, the injury could have been a lot more severe than it appears. Bird was not having the greatest of spring training, batting .154 with one home run.

First base has been a question for the team in the past couple of seasons as 14 different players have started a game there since Opening Day 2016. The Yankees could go with either Tyler Austin, who is having a good spring, or new Yankee Neil Walker to open the season in Toronto on Thursday.
