Yankees Sign Adam Lind to Minor League Deal

Earlier today, the Yankees signed 1B/OF Adam Lind to a non-roster minor league contract with an invite to spring training. The deal came out of nowhere. There were no reports of the Yankees looking to add first base depth however, in an “under the radar” move by Brian Cashman, Adam Lind is now a New York Yankee.

First off, this is a STEAL. Lind was with the Nationals last year to backup Ryan Zimmerman and he was still productive with his bat in limited appearances. He hit .303 with 14 homeruns and 59 RBIs. Yes, Lind’s best years are most likely behind him, but the numbers he put up last year are impressive, considering he only had 267 at-bats.

With that aside, this deal doesn’t mean Lind is a lock to be on the Yankees Opening Day roster as the backup first baseman. He and Tyler Austin will most likely be battling it out to see who ends up with the big league club. Austin has the potential to be a great major league hitter and the Yankees know that, so Lind is going to have to show his abilities if he wants the job.

The Yankees face the Braves at 1:05 PM ET today, making it unlikely that Lind will get playing time, let alone be at the game. However, Lind will eventually get his chance and Yankee fans will get to see another battle for a roster spot, this time at first base.
