Tyler Austin Walks It Off; Yankees Improve to 7-1

The New York Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 via a walk-off home run by Tyler Austin. Miguel Andujar, Didi Gregorius, Giancarlo Stanton and Tyler Austin provided the offense for the Yankees. Tanaka disappointed, but was backed by Jordan Montgomery in the win.

Masahiro Tanaka got the nod for the Yankees, making his spring debut, and struggled from the start. He gave up four earned runs, including a two run shot by Ronald Acuna. Despite his bad start, Chasen Shreve, Jordan Montgomery, Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loaisiga and J.P. Feyereisen did not allow runs in relief. Montgomery impressed the most out of this group, throwing three innings and recording five strikeouts. The curveball was sharp, as usual, and accounted for the majority of his strikeouts.

On the offensive end, Andujar and Tyler Austin stayed hot, while Didi and Stanton combined for five hits and three runs batted in. A major headline was Russell Wilson getting an at bat this game, making his Yankees debut. He fouled off the first pitch behind the screen, eventually striking out. In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Wade lead off with a bunt single. Gleyber Torres then hit into what looked like a double play, but due to an errant throw by the Braves Torres, reached first base. Cue the hero, Tyler Austin. On a 2-0 pitch, Austin belted a line drive home run to center field to win the game.

The main question remaining for the Yankees is who will get to be the starting 2nd and 3rd baseman on Opening Day. The main candidates are Gleyber Torres, Tyler Wade, Miguel Andujar, Ronald Torreyes and Brandon Drury. Andujar had a run scoring double, Wade had a bunt single, Torres scored a run and Torreyes grounded out. Brandon Drury did not get to play today. Great game by the New York Yankees to improve to 7-1 this spring.
