Despite Late Inning Comeback, Yankees Take First Loss Of Spring

March 1, 2018

The Yankees lost their first game of Spring Training to the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9-6. Luis Cessa got the start for the Yankees, and gave up four hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two and walking one over 2+ innings. Aaron Judge made his Spring debut, going 0-2 with a strikeout. Giancarlo Stanton picked up his first hit of the Spring in the bottom of the first inning, and Gary Sanchez followed him up by hitting his first home run, clearing the scoreboard at George M. Steinbrenner field, to put the Yanks up 2-0. Cessa broke down in the third inning after a solid 1st and 2nd, giving up four runs without recording an out before being lifted from the game by Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone. He was replaced by Adam Warren, who pitched three scoreless innings, striking out one.

The score remained 4-2 until the top of the sixth inning, when Brayan Peña hit an RBI single off of Dellin Betances to score Christin Stewart and put the Tigers up 5-2. Peña would drive in another run on a groundout in the eighth, making the score 6-2. However, the Yankees answered right back in the bottom of the inning and tied the game at 6. Estevan Florial hit a two-run single to make the game 6-4, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Mark Montgomery, which also scored Tyler Wade to make it a one-run game. Danny Espinosa followed by striking out swinging, but yet another wild pitch by Montgomery allowed him to reach first and Florial to score, tying the game. The Tigers escaped the inning with no further damage, as Montgomery picked Espinosa off at second following a stolen base.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run double by Dominic Ficociello and a sacrifice fly by Christin Stewart putting Detroit back up 9-6. The Yankees loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, but Erik Kratz popped out (infield fly rule) and Ryan McBroom struck out to end the game. The Yankees’ five-game winning streak to start Spring Training has been snapped, and they join the Tigers, Red Sox, and Marlins as the only Grapefruit League teams with only one loss. The Yankees will take on the Phillies for the third time this Spring, and second time at Spectrum Field in Clearwater. CC Sabathia will make his first appearance of Spring Training, starting opposite Nick Pivetta. First pitch is at 1:05 PM ET.
