Luis Medina is one of seven pitchers, along with Chance Adams, Justice Sheffield and others, among the top ten Yankee prospects for 2018, according to Baseball Prospectus. Medina is a raw but incredibly exciting talent. It's time to get to know the 18 year old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, who was signed as an international free agent on July 8th, 2015.
Medina was assigned to the Yankees1 Dominican Summer League (DSL) for the 2016 season and part of the 2017 season. In 2016, he appeared in 3 games and pitched to a 1.93 ERA with 4 SOs and had a WHIP of 1.29 . In 2017, he appeared in games in both the DSL Yankees1 and Pulaski of the Appalachian League. His combined totals for 2017 included a 2-2 record in 12 games, with a 4.98 ERA, 43 SOs and a 1.41 WHIP. While his performance thus far, between the DSL and the Appalachian Leagues has not been stellar, he has kept the ball on the ground, with almost twice as many ground ball outs as fly outs or line outs and only one home run allowed.
Medina is a top-end arm, who was already hitting 100 MPH at age 16 and his ceiling is sky high because of it. His command needs work, as well as his secondary pitches (the curveball and changeup both show potential), but which 18 year old pitcher's command doesn’t. He will look to work on these elements as he rises through the organization in 2018.
Randy Miller, of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, has a written an excellent article updating the scouting report of top Yankee prospects. Miller reports that the scout said of Medina:
“I love him. Love him. This guy has a chance to be really, really good. I saw him throw 94-100 and sit at 97 for four innings. And he’s only 18 years old. The stuff comes and goes because he’s so young and he’s still learning how to pitch, but he can have sequences where you’re watching him and thinking, ‘Holy hell!’ His ceiling is unlimited.”
Scouts believe that Medina is the real deal and is projected as a potential number two starter in the organization. Yankees fans should be eager to see him in the Bronx one day soon.
