Will Chance Adams ever debut with the New York Yankees?

December 20, 2017

Chance Adams is the number two prospect overall and the number one pitching prospect in the Yankees organization.  To give you an idea of how impressive that is in this stacked farm system, six of their top ten prospects are pitchers. The bottom line is the Yankees have the pitching depth that enables them to make a big trade.

Chance Adams is the name on everyone’s lips as rumors swirl around the hot stove this offseason, particularly recently, when the Pirates were said to be asking for Clint Frazier or Gleyber Torres and a working pitcher capable of starting.  Opportunity, it would seem, is knocking on Chance Adams’ door for 2018, whether it be with the Yankees or with another team. Matt Provenzano of pinstripealley.com has said that the “Yankees prospect Chance Adams looks to be the next man up, as he’s currently the top-ranked pitching prospect in an already stacked farm system.”

In 2016, Adams tossed a 13-1 record with a 2.33 ERA in Double-A Trenton.  He opened the 2017 season in Trenton, but after a few starts was promoted to the Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders.  It was only his second season as a starter and Adams posted a 2.45 ERA over 27 starts with 8.1 K/9 and a 1.078 WHIP.  115 of his innings took place at the Triple-A level. This kid is major league ready.

Scouts have said that Adams has intriguing potential, hitting 95 MPH on the gun with a fastball which doesn’t feature a lot of life, but does feature a combination of velocity and command, making it difficult to hit. He throws a well-above average slider in the mid 80s.  His changeup fades away and has become more effective as he has used it more frequently and his curveball, described as his worst pitch, still grades as average.  He locates his pitches well and attacks hitters, which seems to be his biggest strength.

While Yankees fans clamor for a chance to see Adams in the Bronx (pun intended), the Yankees may feel he is expendable due to their other high-ceiling prospects, such as Justus Sheffield, Domingo Acevedo, Domingo German, and Albert Abreu.  The question becomes not if, but when Chance Adams gets his opportunity, will it be in Yankee pinstripes?
