Report: Summary of Winter Meetings and Trade Rumors
The Winter Meetings took place this past week in Florida, and as usual, the Yankees were busy. Obviously, the week started off with the introduction of the newly acquired Yankee outfielder/DH, Giancarlo Stanton, but the Yankees weren't done there.
A deal was made that sent Chase Headley and Bryan Mitchell (and $500,000) to San Diego for Jabari Blash. Blash is a 28 year old minor league outfielder who hit .213 with 5 home runs and 16 RBIs in 2017. He was initially drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2007.
The Yankees did not make any roster changes regarding starting pitchers, although there are rumors flying about several.
The team is reportedly interested in Pirates' pitcher Gerrit Cole. In 2017, Cole was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 games. The Pirates are reportedly interested in Clint Frazier and some other highly touted prospects in the Yankees' organization.
Another pitcher the Yankees are reportedly interested in, is Michael Fulmer of the Detroit Tigers. Yankee fans might remember Fulmer as the one who started the Yankees/Tigers brawl which ended with Sanchez and Romine suspended for a few games last season. In 2017, Fulmer went 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA in 25 games for Detroit.
The Yankees are trying to also unload Jacoby Ellsbury and at least part of his remaining contract. With the addition of Stanton in the outfield, Ellsbury is the odd man out. Jacoby and his family live in Arizona and the Yankees and Diamondbacks have reportedly discussed a possible trade to send him there while bringing over Patrick Corbin or Brandon Drury from Arizona. In addition to living in Arizona, Diamondbacks' general manager Mike Hazen and manager Tony Luvollo were with him in Boston. Ellsbury has a full no-trade clause and would have to approve any trade. He previously has indicated he will not waive his no-trade clause and wants to win back the starting center field position in Spring Training for the New York Yankees.
