After the buzz died down from the Giancarlo Stanton trade to the Yankees during the Winter Meetings last week, a new buzz began that the Yankees were looking to acquire Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to Jon Heyman, a Gerrit Cole trade to New York would have to revolve around Yankees' top prospect Gleyber Torres--- who Yankee GM Brian Cashman has implied, is untouchable. Pirates are rumored to also want Yankees top pitching prospect Chance Adams included in the deal.
Originally drafted by the Yankees out of high school in the 2008 draft, Cole elected to go to UCLA for college and was later drafted by the Pirates in 2011.
Prior to the 2013 season, Cole was considered the ninth best prospect in baseball. He debuted with the Pirates in June 2013. From 2012, his first year in the minors through 2016 with the Pirates, Cole had a 3.23 ERA (118 ERA+) in 579 1/3 innings and finished fourth in the National League Cy Young balloting in 2015.
Cole, 27 owns a 3.50 ERA across 127 starts in his career. In his 33 starts this season, he posted a 12-12 record with a 4.26 ERA and 196 strikeouts in 203 innings. He has been durable for the Pirates and was 1 of just 15 big league starters to log at least 20 innings pitched and 1 of only 12 to make at least 33 starts. Cole worked 203 innings, which would have led the Yankees 2017* (PUT BOTTOM OF ARTICLE) (Luis Severino led Yankees in 2017 with 193 1/3rd innings pitched)
Infielder Gleyber Torres is the number one prospect in the Yankees organization; however, he is coming off of Tommy John surgery in his non-throwing arm. Torres hit .273 with 5 homers and 18 RBIs in 32 games at Double-A Trenton in 2017 and hit .309 with 2 home runs and 16 RBI’s at Scranton Wilkes-Barre before his injury on June 17th. Brian Cashman has told fans that Torres will be vying for a position in Spring Training.
Chance Adams is the number two prospect in the Yankee system and the right-hander had a stellar 2017, going 11-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 Triple-A starts after posting a 4-0 record and 1.03 ERA in 6 Double-A starts.
Pittsburgh's steep asking price, combined with the Yankees resigning of CC Sabathia on a 1 year, $10 million contract today, make it unlikely that Gerritt Cole will be wearing pinstripes in 2018
