Report: Leading candidates for Yankee manager
Carlos Beltran interviewed with the Yankees yesterday for the open managerial position. It is being reported that he, along with Aaron Boone and Hensley Meulens, gave impressive interviews. Wedge and Woodward seemed to have talked themselves out of the race, and bench coach Rob Thomson was simply "Okay" but still a viable candidate.
Beltran discussed his family being 100% behind his decision to be the Yankees' manager, if he is chosen. He indicated his wife specifically, has "been supportive of my career as a ballplayer and she knows that this is something I've wanted to do."
He also discussed being surprised to get the call from Cashman so soon after retirement but talked about being excited to have the chance to interview, "These types of opportunities, especially one with the Yankees, they don't come very often."
Due to Beltran's lack of experience as a manager, he indicated he would want a bench coach with managerial experience. Joe Girardi for bench coach?
Beltran indicated prior to meeting with the Yankees he spoke to Omar Minaya, who was the GM when Beltran was with the Mets. Omar gave Beltran some ideas about what kind of questions to expect from Cashman and the Yankees.
Carlos was well respected and popular in all of the clubhouses he has been in and has tried to reach out to the younger players to mentor them. Time will tell if Carlos fits the mold for what the Yankees are looking for. Yankee's say they still plan to interview 1-2 more candidates with no apparent time table for making a decision.
