Yankees Go All-In, Give The Money Back To The House
It's really hard to quantify how I feel about this Yankees season now that it's over. On one hand they were supposed to be rebuilding. They were supposed to be transitioning from the old, boring Yankees to the new breed of Bombers and because of that you didn't expect much out of this season. You just wanted to see if Judge, Bird and Sanchez were ready for New York and if the Yankees could build around them. Then if the Yankees could compete for a playoff spot and be relevant in September that was a bonus. They did that and more by locking up the top Wild Card. So the season is a success.
Then on the other hand they got to the ALCS. The February expectations are out the window. You're here now and you had a 3-2 lead in the series. You had two chances to bring home the Yankees 41st League Championship. You can't take these opportunities for granted because you never know if you're ever going to get this close again. The Yankees score 1 run in Games 6 and 7 and the season ends in bitter disappointment.
The crappy feeling in the pit of your stomach sucks but it's a good thing. It means that you now expect the New York Yankees to do great things. That's something we haven't felt in the Bronx since 2012. It means the Yankees are back.
I loved this Yankees team more than I've loved any non-World Series team and maybe even more than some of those. They battled all year. They defied expectations all year. They showed they were not here to rebuild but take back their spot as not only the kings of New York but the kings of the American League. This was an amazing year that fell a game short of being special.
Last night sucked and today isn't any better but the feeling will fade and you'll look back and realize this was just step one. Just like the bitter loss to Seattle in 1995 was just step one. Judge, Bird and Sanchez all delivered big hits in this postseason. You know the talent is there and believe it or not there's more on the way. There's no need to hang your head low today. This isn't the end of the road. Wear that NY on your head proud because the Yankees are only at the beginning of something great.
